What do we have to offer?
As parents of a special needs young adult, we are aware of the difficulties our son experiences when trying to organize and participate in social events, manage his money, maintain a healthy diet and get regular exercise. His lack of executive functioning skills prevents him from being able to completely live on his own. We’ve tried agencies in the St. Louis area and nothing has been an appropriate fit for him and we’ve been frustrated with lack of appropriate care for him.
Through conversations with other parents, we’ve learned that there are many others who are in the exact same situation we are. Their child is growing older and is not yet ready to be completely independent for one reason or another. As parents, we struggle with the question, “What will happen to my child when I’m gone?”
Bay Independent Homes strives to be the answer to this question. Staff will be available to help where needed but our roommates will navigate life mostly on their own. We work to find roommates who have similar interests so they may develop interpersonal relationships within their home. In the future, other homes will be within walking distance of each other, in an effort to create a community where our roommates feel they are part of a larger community. We plan a variety of activities that will help our residents live a life that’s full of happiness and joy, while they have opportunities to create and foster friendships and find success in their community.
