About Us

More Info

We are St. Louis natives and the parents of a special needs young man who longs for a typical life where he can work, attend social events and be independent of his parents, but who needs a little bit of support to be able to do this successfully. Waiting lists are long in the St. Louis area for this type of supported living and we've found the services provided by agencies didn't always fit our son's needs. Because of these issues, we decided to start our own business to provide beautiful homes to people who just need a little help to find success on their own. We hope to grow quickly and create social activities that occur naturally (eg. backyard barbeques) by having homes in close proximity to each other. Imagine your special needs young adult walking down the street to a friend's house to socialize! This is our dream for our son and why we have started Bay Independent Homes.

Our homes are in safe residential neighborhoods with access to public transportation. Each roommate is expected to work and play and be an active member in the home. The roommates are carefully chosen in an effort to find the best match of people living together. Social activities are planned by the staff & the roommates for them to participate in and enjoy. Staff are also available to help meet the needs of each roommate with activities such as grocery planning and shopping, laundry, cleaning, etc. Most importantly, we want each roommate to feel at home, safe, and well cared for in his new residence.

Meet Kim

I am a retired middle and high school teacher who began my professional life as a social worker. I graduated in 1993 from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a B.S. in Psychology. My first social work job out of college was working in a residential home for 8 cognitively disabled adults. I later went to work for the State of Missouri with the Children’s Division and later joined St. Louis County as a juvenile officer. I eventually went back to SIU-E and earned my teaching certificate in Middle and High school English, then later, attended Maryville University in Chesterfield and earned my Master’s Degree in Education. I feel my education and professional experience, as well as being Mom to 2 exceptional young men, one who manages mental illness, autism and cognitive delay, has prepared me for the task of helping others who want to live a fulfilling, independent life with Bay Independent Homes. I work with compassion, integrity, and drive: all qualities that have made me successful as a professional and as a mom.

Meet Nelson

I am currently a general manager for a hotel and have spent my entire career in the hospitality industry. I know what it takes to meet and exceed the needs of my team members and guests. My hotel has consistently ranked as one of the top in the St. Louis area in customer service. I graduated from Missouri State University in 1990 with a B.S. degree in Antiquities. My studies focused on human culture studies and the evolution of the human race. This education has been essential in my success when working with people from diverse backgrounds. I approach others in a friendly manner and am patient and understanding: all qualities that have contributed to my success.

We will have been married 29 years in August 2025. I have helped raise the two young men who call me Dad. I feel incredibly blessed to have two sons who are working hard to determine their paths in life. My hope is that Bay Independent Homes will be the catalyst that propels our older son to the happy, independent life he deserves and is looking to achieve.
